Merchant Navy and carbon footprint: net zero target

A recent study on major shipowners' commitment to decarbonize the maritime industry reveals the following:

  • Of these shipowners, 35% have a game plan to reach net zero by 2050 or to follow IMO targets.
  • This percentage is low compared to other industries (automotive: 66%, petrochemical: 56%, transportation and leisure: 45%).
  • Container ship shipowners are the most proactive (69%) ahead of RoRo (40%) and far ahead of tankers (17%) and bulk carriers (13%).
  • The net zero 2050 target, which is more ambitious than the IMO target, concerns only 13% of shipowners' commitments.
  • Only shipowners with a game plan publish their GHG emissions reports. Almost all of the others do not provide carbon emission reports.

The study points out that the most important decision to begin a decarbonization policy is to calculate (or have calculated) your own GHG emissions.

Eolyss offers shipowners a powerful platform for calculating GHGs and marine pollutants from their vessels. For more information, contact us at info@eolyss.com.
