The transportation industry is a major user of fossil fuels and a large emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs). The transportation sector alone is estimated to be responsible for nearly one-third of GHG emissions in the United States.
Research conducted at the École Polytechnique de Lausanne is opening up a new perspective in the treatment of GHGs by proposing a device that captures GHGs at the exhaust outlet and liquefies the carbon dioxide.
This experimental system would allow the recovery of up to 90% of the CO2 on a truck or bus travelling nearly 300 km per day for an additional weight of about 2 tons. The liquefied CO2 could in turn be recycled into fuel using energy from renewable sources.
This principle could be extended to all modes of transport emitting CO2 and in particular diesel trains and merchant ships.
